Worktop questions, honestly answered

Common questions we get asked about laminate worktops — no sales spin.

Are laminate worktops as durable as granite or quartz?

For everyday kitchen use — yes. Modern laminate worktops have a hardwearing surface that resists scratches, stains and impact much better than older laminates. The trade-off is they're not heatproof (always use a trivet for hot pans) and you shouldn't cut directly on them — but they're significantly cheaper, much lighter to handle, and warmer to the touch than stone. With reasonable care a Bushboard worktop will easily last 20+ years.

Can you cut directly on the worktop?

No — always use a chopping board. Knife cuts will permanently damage the surface and won't be covered under the warranty. Same goes for stone or quartz worktops; cutting directly on any worktop is a bad idea.

Will it scorch if I put a hot pan on it?

Yes — never put pans, oven trays or hot kettles directly on the surface. Use a trivet or pan stand. Brief contact with a warm mug is fine; anything hotter will mark or blister the laminate. We supply a care leaflet on completion.

How do I clean and look after it?

Day to day: warm soapy water and a soft cloth. For stubborn marks, a mild non-abrasive cream cleaner works well. Avoid bleach, scouring pads, or anything abrasive. Wipe up spills (especially around joints and the sink) reasonably promptly — the surface is water-resistant but the inner core isn't, so prolonged standing water at a joint is the one thing to watch.

What about the joints where two pieces meet?

All joints are masoned, glued and bolted from underneath using Bushboard's colour-matched sealant, which gives a near-invisible seam that's fully sealed against water. We always run the joints away from the sink and hob where possible, and the sealant carries a 25-year guarantee.

Can I have the worktop run round a corner without a joint?

Often yes — for L-shaped kitchens, Bushboard's postformed (curved) edge worktops can be supplied as one continuous piece around 90° bends, eliminating the corner joint. Darren will check this at the home visit; it depends on the exact dimensions and access.

Do you fit upstands and splashbacks too?

Yes — matching upstands (100mm tall) come with most Bushboard ranges and are fitted to the wall behind the worktop using clear silicone, giving a clean tile-free finish. Full-height splashbacks behind the hob are also available in many of the colours we sell.

What about the existing sink, taps and hob?

Darren handles all the disconnects himself — built-in sinks, taps, electric hobs and ovens. For gas hobs, we bring in a Gas Safe engineer for the gas connection (usually same day). New worktop = new cut-outs, so we'll re-template for your existing sink and hob, or fit new ones if you'd like to upgrade at the same time.
